Edward (Ed) Jeske

b. 18 January 1925 - d. 22 April 2012

http://www.mckennafuneral.com/obituaries.html

Edward "Ed" Jeske has passed away peacefully in Yellowknife on April 22, 2012, at the age of 85, after a great life, well lived.  The youngest of eight siblings born in Poland to Adolph and Tillie Jeske, Ed grew up on a farm in Minitonas, Manitoba.

He and his young wife Blanche arrived in the North in 1956 where he helped build the first airstrip in what is now Inuvik. He settled his young family in Yellowknife in 1958, and began a distinguished 31-year teaching career at Sir John Franklin Territorial High School.  Ed taught everything from heavy equipment operation, construction, automotive, and driver training to students who came from all over the arctic.  He loved his students and co-workers alike and taught with patience and humour.

Ed marked every day of his life with generosity, Christian service, volunteerism, sportsmanship, humanity, friendship and sheer love of life.  He was a passionate booster of Yellowknife and life in the North and was loved by everyone he ever worked with.

He was the recipient of awards, honours, lifetime memberships and citations too numerous to list.  His most distinguished honours included the Yellowknife Respected Elder and Volunteer of NWT, the Queen's 50th Golden Jubilee Medal, the Ed Jeske Bursary, and he represented Yellowknife three times at the National Senior Mens' Curling Championships.

The greatest highlight of all came when Ed's contribution to the game of hockey in Yellowknife was recognized with the naming of the new Olympic ice arena after him in 2009.  Ed loved a ceremony, a good party, a homecoming, Lunch with the Bunch, buns at Barb's, or any happy celebration, and he was known to yodel when the moment was right.

Ed leaves an inspirational legacy of love, he will be deeply missed by his lifelong companions Jan Stirling and Barb Bromley and will be missed most of all by his family:  sons Dale (Wendy) and Wayne (Candy), daughter Cindy, and grandchildren Alexandra (Matt), Ian, Hayley, Jeff, Michael, Adam, Spencer, and Bryce.

A celebration of Ed's life will be held Saturday, April 28th at 2:30 at Northern United Place and the Sir John Franklin School Gymnasium, with a reception to follow in the Gymnasium.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make a donation in Ed's name to the Yellowknife United Church, the Yellowknife Seniors Society, or any of the charities and services Ed supported.

Yukon festivals a treat for the senses

Yukon festivals a treat for the senses
Music, other events add to summer magic
[excerpt]

From soothing sounds for the ears right down to lively dancing feet, summer music festivals in the Yukon are a treat for all the senses.

Along with the rhythmic talents of performers such as David Lindley, Blue Highway, the Gibson Brothers and Annie Lou, the atmosphere of 24-hour sunlight and Klondike gold rush culture makes attending one of the territory's festivals an event to be cherished.

If you go:

Annual Sheep & Crane Viewing Festival, May 11 to 13

A major North American migration of Sandhill cranes funnels through the "Birdlock of Sandhill Cranes Highway," swooping, soaring and riding thermals over the town of Faro en route to nesting grounds in western Alaska and northeastern Siberia. Admire unique Fannin's sheep and enjoy natural history walks and talks while you're there. (faroyukon.ca)

Commissioner's Tea and Klondike Ball, June 9

Steeped in tradition and nostalgia for the region's rich and flavourful history, the annual Commissioner's Tea is co-hosted by Parks Canada, IODE and the Commissioner on the lawns of the grand Commissioner's Residence in Dawson City, Yukon. Dress up in your 1898-era finest to sip tea, then dance the night away at the Klondike Ball at the Palace Grand Theatre. (commissioner.gov.yk.ca/tea.html)

Pelly Valley Festival, July 28

This family friendly festival features storytellers, guided hikes, art demonstrations and workshops, a bocce tournament and wild game BBQ, all taking place at the Campbell Region Interpretive Centre. (northofordinary.ca)

Discovery Day Celebrations, Dawson City, Aug. 16 to 19

In August 1896, three Yukon sourdoughs — George Carmack, Dawson Charlie and Skookum Jim — discovered gold in what is now called Bonanza Creek, kick-starting one of the world's greatest gold rush stampedes. Celebrate the history behind the creation of the Yukon Territory with crafts, face painting, walking tours, cake, historical street theatre, Mounties in red serge and Diamond Tooth Gerties' Can Can dancers.

Five days of events include: Authors on Eighth, celebrating iconic northern writers Robert Service, Jack London and Pierre Berton; Yukon Riverside Arts Festival, with interactive artist tents and musicians; Discovery Day 10-kilometre run; Discovery Days Golf Tournament featuring nine holes lit by the midnight sun; and Klondike Valley Mud Bog, where monster trucks and other creative vehicles race across a mud bog. Bring earplugs! (dawsoncity.ca)

Great Klondike International Outhouse Race, Sept. 1

Appreciate a whole new meaning of Labour Day with this scavenger hunt and race involving decorated outhouses on wheels. Visitors are encouraged to participate — outhouses are supplied. (dawsoncity.ca)

Pathways to Prosperity: Northern Governance & Economy Conference in Yellowknife NWT & Funding Opportunity: PhD Student

Pathways to Prosperity: Northern Governance and Economy Conference in Yellowknife NWT
http://findingdahshaa.ca/2012-northern-governance-and-economy-conference/
[excerpt]

 The purpose of the conference is to:

  • Bring together Indigenous and Northern business leaders, policy makers, and social activists with academics working on Indigenous and Northern issues for information exchange and networking;
  • Vision how political institutions could change to better accommodate shifting governance authorities (land claim, self government, devolution) to create social and economic stability;
  • Vision concrete partnerships, mechanisms and strategic goals essential for actioning change toward social and economic stability and prosperity.

Participants

Business and social issues advocates often operate in solitude, or speak about each other but rarely have forums to work together. The exception is Indigenous governments and businesses: in the NWT these are often established through land claims capital, and a purpose of Indigenous businesses is to promote social and economic opportunity for its membership. The impact of land claim businesses, the employment, profit and community development opportunities they generate, and their influence in the social sphere extends beyond Indigenous peoples to affect the broader NWT economy and citizens. Participants will have time to reflect on NWT political institutions' roles in creating social and business stability and prosperity, and how policies of and changes in those institutions might improve the socio-economic landscape.
